NU SKIN MLM: 15th Floor Octagon Center (aka Teleperformance Center), San Miguel Avenue, Ortigas

i am notorious for not answering my mobile if the phone number trying to contact me is not saved in my caller ID list. so imagine how displeased i am that the one time i am trite and apologetic and honestly concerned for the well-being of a random caller on my mobile, this happens to me.

two days ago, i received a phone call from someone introducing himself as the brother of a jeremy tul*y. at the time, i was neck deep in checques and bank payments from our japanese office that i was rather short with the caller, and said that i did not know any jeremys.

half an hour later, i realized that jeremy = haji69 at the forums. i immediately called up hazel to check, and she confirmed that our mysterious jeremy tul*y was indeed haji69. fearing that some minor family catastrophe had befallen haji to the point that his closest relatives were asking about him from online acquaintances, i left a message with his brother to contact me as soon as he can.

fast forward to today (more specifically -- forty five minutes ago), i received a second call from jeremy's brother. he said -- and i am simply paraphrasing here -- that he would like to offer me a part-time job with a US-based company that could potentially earn me upwards of USD 400 per month.

he also said that to facilitate the "pre-qualification process" (his words, not mine), i would have to show up for an interview-slash-meeting on tuesday after work. he gave me an address, advised me to come in business attire, and admonished me that if i were to cancel, i should do the professional thing and call ahead.

it was that last thing that actually tipped me off that there was something not-quite-kosher with the whole deal. i mean -- despite evidence on the contrary (temper tantrums and a fixation with shiny objects), i do know how to act like a professional. i've been working in a freaking financial services firm for crying out loud -- being unprofessional is a sure ticket out of the company and into welfare.

so, i called up my best friend GOOGLE and inquired ever so politely about -- yep, 15th Floor, Octagon Center, San Miguel Avenue, Ortigas. on the very first page i get a number of local blogs all talking about the same thing: phone calls from strangers, NU SKIN, and MLM.

the next half hour was spent scrolling through other people's blogs, lolz-ing at the obvious sock-puppet opinions left by NU SKIN (also called PHARMANEX and/or SYNERGY1) employees in the blog entry comments pages (edited to add: I FINALLY GOT MY FIRST NUSKIN TROLL LMAO), and commiserating with my best friend on the phone on the irony of how the one un-IDed call i decided to take had to be the one from a telemarketer.

i mentally ticked off a list of things i wanted jeremy's "brother" to know, downed the last of my double venti latte, and called up his number. i didn't give him the chance to get a word in edgewise. i said that i did not appreciate his honesty or lack of thereof, that how dare he assume that i did not know how to use search engines, and that his USD 400 bait was small fry compared to what i was earning right here, right now (hair flip!).

i also said that while i was not happy for being mistaken for a mark, i did not blame him personally, and that my ire was directed at his company's underhanded marketing and recruitment tactics. last but not least his "brother" jeremy -- if indeed they were related and it isn't some made-up connection -- will be hearing about this from me. at lenght. and maybe the whole effin' internet while we're at it.

update on 31st march 2010

thanks to a troll account who repeatedly left comments on this entry defending her supposedly "trustworthy" company (and we all know truthful they really are about what they do and how they earn their money), i've recently discovered that the building name has changed to teleperformance center.

a bit more rooting round yields some new information about NUSKIN/PHARMANEX/SYNERGY1/whoever-the-hell-they-are that have also started operating from a makati office. the address is 26th floor trafalgar plaza, h.v. dela costa street, salcedo village, makati city.

both locations are still basically the same company up to the same shenanigans. caveat emptor, kids <3

Oh. OHHHH. I got the same call a week or so ago. I could hardly hear the person because it was incredibly noisy on his end, but I did catch the name "Jeremy." I actually forgot all about it until I read your post and everything came into place.

Oh Gawd, thats the same place...they're still around?!?! Someone invited for a "talk for other business opportunities" last year when I was still working at Ortigas...

Unfortunately, I went to the place and heard them out...but when I realized their scheme is MLM. I ran out as fast as I can possibly could...LOL

Newbie ata. Pero hindi naman ako kinulit. Isang beses lang tumawag. Asar ano?

I hate calls like that. One time, I was unusually nice because I thought it was a legit freelance writing gig. Until they refused to give me details (project requirements, deadlines, etc), quite unusual in my line of work, and just insisted that I go to a certain place at a certain time. Warning bells in my head---mukhang direct selling thing. Gusto ko sabihin, excuse me, mahal po ang oras ko. Kung talagang trabaho yan at kailangan n'yo ko, I'm sure nag-overview na kayo ng creative brief jan.

Incidentally, I tried your reading level meme. I don't know if I should be insulted but I scored elementary on my personal blog and junior high on kitchen cow. Gawd, even a meme thinks I've no grey matter between my ears. Yay for memes!

Also got the same call...twice

The first call I got I didn't quite catch the name of the company the caller belonged because he spoke so fast. But the second call was from someone in Synergy One. I blogged about it. Just check the site here http://tesstermulo.com/2007/11/23/this-time-theyre-synergy-one-international/

I have this feeling that jeremy gave him your number. Based on your story, it didn't seem like he was faking being a someone your online acquaintance knows. Probably the 'being a brother' is the lie. Well, anyway, I do hope you get to talk to that jeremy person. Such callers are really annoying. So far I haven't received anything like that except for a lot of SMS inviting me to TAX SEMINARS, promoting a new hotel somewhere in ORTIGAS (I think), BUSINESS SEMINARS, etc. Sometimes they'd send SMS in 2 parts. The second part of the message would come from a different number. I get spammed in my email and I can't believe I have to receive even more in my cellphone. Fuckers! Anyway, my mom gets a lot of such callers. They would call during work hours pa nga. My mom is bitchier than I am. Haha~ She was being invited to a seminar or whatever shit they come up with on a WEEKDAY. Even on a working time. She got pissed. Ano ba raw tingin nila sa kanya -- na wala siyang job? Hahah~ XD;;; Kawawa mga naloloko at sumasali doon. Katangahan ang tinuturo sa kanila. Tsk, tsk.

Paano kaya kung lahat mabulag sa $400+ na sweldo? Lahat na sasali tapos wala na sila mabebentahan ng questionable products nila. *rofl*

someone called me rin kanina.. landline po ginamit sa pagtawag sa cp ko.. here's the number:02-3830726.. she said she's the SENIOR EXECUTIVE of the company and her name is Ms. Rachelle Porras.. she even knew that i was about to graduate.. and they said i was referred by someone i cant even recall.. seems like i dont know the person she's talking about.. she said the job was project-based and they really need industrial engineers.. and just the same.. she said i could receive a monthly salary of around 20K+.. also, she said if i would come.. it would be scheduled 630pm tomorrow(tues) or 330pm(wednesday) and i really should come coz she had to cancel some of her appointments just to meet me.. i know we industrial engineers know a lot about business and marketing but i dont want to get in such a scam.. good thing i searched the net first before going.. they can say everything they want.. they could call me "unprofessional" if they want but i really wouldn't go to such a meeting that would waste my time..

Re: 15th floor octagon center SCAMMMMMMMMMM

I agree. Last night may tumawag sa akin. beware of these persons:

1. Dandee De Guzman - 09228541284
2. Eduardo Prangan Jr. - 09156076376

their recruitments are bougus. I play for a while. Just to get enough information from them. What irritates me, is that they are forcing me to attend and that I would be unprofessional if I decline. When I got enough information on them, I googled the address. 15th floor Octagon building ortigas center that they gave me. This is annoying enough for me, NO COMPANY NAMES? or even NATURE OF THEIR BUSINESS?? baaah! Those assholes should think twice.

the advantage of GOOGLE

I receive 2 separate calls giving the same introduction and same office address. The first time I received a call thru my cellphone, a girl called me and asked for an appointment. Apparently, I was not able to come due to work restrain. Just recently, I received another call. This time, a guy called thru our landline. I wonder how he got that number. I don't give easily my landline number to anyone. The same deal he gave me. That they are a US based MULTINATIONAL Company looking for qualified people to work in their team. Here's a cache, he even told me that he got my "file" from a 3rd party HR facility. This time, I really got curious thinking that it might be a HeadHunter and at the same time, giving a second thougt about it. I found myself scrolling on GOOGLE, searching for an answer to my own questions about 15th FLR OCTAGON CENTER. Here, I found out a lot of things about it. I'm really thankful that the Net saved me from almost getting into trouble.

Ms. Catherine

That's the name of the one who called me and this is her number: 09162085468.

This time, the bait was that I was recommended to them by UP Manila and that being a UP student, she expects me to be there tomorrow at 630pm but because i googled, I already replied to tell her I'm not interested.

ATTN: DREAMSTEALERS!!

guys, i understand your concerns, the problem is you haven't had the chance to at least check the details man lang. saka hindi natin maiwasan na may mga abusado talagang agents/distributor na greedy talaga. sana huwag niyo namang lahatin at husgahan ang company pati yung mga tao na bumubuo nito. im sure pag ininvite kayo in proper and professional way, mas maiintindihan niyo talaga yung meaning ng business. Kasi yung ginagawa ng iba "ambush invite" yun hindi nila sinasabi ng maayos kung ano ba talaga ang ieexpect mo sa meeting, at hindi tinuturo ng company na i-persuade, mangulit at magtext ng madaling araw para maabala yung mga tao. pag na-orient namin ang isang tao at ayaw talaga niya ang business we let go, meaning the business is not for there or not the right timing, hindi namin PINIPILIT. and AGAIN NU SKIN/PHARMANEX ENTERPRISES IS NOT A SCAM AND OBVIOUSLY NOT PYRAMIDING.

Aah, I have three of these people in my team. I think one of them is pretty high up on the executive chain? My college classmates are all in it, too. They tried to recruit me a couple of times, I just brushed it off. At some point, I got conned by a random text message pretending to be some sort of employment thing to go to their building (an extremely long walk away). >: T I just went and brushed that off, too, after talking to the dude who invited me and firmly turning him away. Seriously, these guys can be really, really persistent.

Re: is this for real??

THIS IS REAL.

There are 2 types of bloggers -- opinionated and informed.

Opinions are cheap and can come from people who have little success to show in their lives... If someone isn't even making P100k per month, they really don't understand what they're talking about as they are just pawns in the bigger scheme of things. Beware. Talk is cheap.

Informed people do due diligence.

Here are some FACTS (verifiable via net):
Nu Skin is listed as a NYSE company under symbol NUS. (search Google: NUS NYSE)
Forbes magazine featured Nu Skin as TOP 5 Most Trustworth companies in the Mid Cap category (search Google)
Ernst and Young awarded Nu Skin Chairman Blake Roney Entrepreneur of the Year.

If you listen to GoNegosyo guys... that's amateur play. This is BIG Business... for those who know how to see one.

And they are still at it

But this time, no calls were made. I was approached while walking along J Vargas this week's Monday morning rush. In fairness, the girl was nice, soft spoken, all smile, good natured it may seem. Everything else is the same. Address, business attire, either 3 or 6 pm, bring one valid ID. Yebah.

I got a call today as well. Same spiel as others has written. A Grace Laxamanan called.

Networking is not a scam by itself, this company might have a good business plan, i dont know since i am not going but the way they try to recruit people is unforgivable!! Calling people pretending to be headhunters and making people think this is an interview..BULLSHIT!
Talk about not having respect for other peoples time. This company can go fxxx itself!
